Bill McComb has always enjoyed boating. As a youngster he recalls going out with his Father in a 16 foot boat, a Dunphy inboard with a 4 cylinder Grey marine engine. When the boat was at full throttle it shot up a rooster tail about 30 yards behind the boat which was unique. The reason Bill always asked his Dad to push the throttle to full speed. Bill recalls, " We would take the boat out into the Atlantic sometimes through the Mannessquan inlet and the swells would be huge, the boat would be going uphill and then down". " It was like a roller coaster ride and a lot of fun". However, that view was not shared by his siblings who often pleaded to turn the boat around and head back into the bay.
Since those early days of boating Bill has always enjoyed Boating. After graduating from school he decided to live near the water and moved to Sarasota, Florida. He opened a sports Medicine practice in Sarasota and later expanded it to become a leading Multidisciplinary National Sports Medical center at IMG Academy. He treated many professional athletes from all types of sports from tennis to boat racing.
It was intriguing to Bill to understand how boat racing caused so much damage to his patient's body. He asked his patient to take him for a ride in his race boat. After that Bill began designing ergonomic Race boat seating to help prevent injuries. After testing seating for many hours in Race boats Bill was asked to fill in for an ill Driver and race in his first Offshore Boat race. The rest is history. Bill has been racing since the late 80's. He has raced over many years in races that included racers like Reggie Fountain, Don Johnson, Chuck Norris and Al Copeland (Popeyes). He went head to head with Reggie and Fabio Buzzi in the experimental Offshore race class . Bill went on to Win the AX title in his Ocke Mannerfelt designed boat in 1996. Bill has won 11 World Championship titles racing for brands such as Pier 57, General motors, Patron, Hawaiian tropic and Rockstar Energy Drink.
Bill recalls racing during what he considers the best years of Offshore which was when the APBA and General motors teamed up and were involved in the series. He won the world Championship during those years in his Pier 57 boat sponsored by Art Wood. Art was not only a friend of Bills' but according to Bill sponsored the best Racers parties in Key west second only to Al Copeland's. Bill and Al developed a friendship after serving together as judges at a Key West Swim suit competition.
After a few years on the sideline Bill is returning to race. Bill waited for the sport to regroup after organizational changes. The APBA is back in action sanctioning the races with new organizations such as P1 and Race World Offshore. Bill feels the timing is right to have some fun and get back into the sport he enjoys so much.
As destiny would have it his son Ryan's company recently purchased Race Winning Brands. A company who owns some of the top racing brands in the world. Before Bill even had the opportunity to speak to other sponsors Race Winning Brands was the winner.
The boat is a 39 foot Skater Vee bottom built by Douglas Marine. The hull is built out of Kevlar and carbon fiber and has a stepped hull design. Bill will race in the Vee Extreme class of the APBA, American Power Boating Association.
The American power boating association is an American membership-owned corporation. In 1903 New York's Columbia Yacht Club had formulated a constitution for what ultimately became the APBA. It is the United States Sanctioning authority for the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM).The UIM is the world's governing body for powerboat racing. Headquartered in Eastpointe, Michigan, the APBA has over 3,500 active members and sanctions over 350 races Nationwide.
